JUNE 2022 – COSTARICAELITE.COM
Every destination across the world is subject to changing weather conditions throughout the year and Costa Rica is no exception. Located in the northern tropics, Costa Rica has just two seasons, the dry and the rainy season. Whilst Costa Rica’s dry season is the most popular time to visit, is it necessarily the best time to visit Costa Rica?
When is the best time to visit Costa Rica?
Home to dozens of varied microclimates, it can be argued that there is no worst time to visit Costa Rica. Weather in Costa Rica can be unreliable but typically falls in line with two seasons. Different seasons attract different travelers and when you choose to visit Costa Rica is completely individual to you.
Costa Rica’s rainy season is typically classed as the low season and for that reason, you can expect minimal crowds and cheaper pricing. However, those benefits are accompanied by unpredictable weather. In the dry season, prices and crowd levels skyrocket but the country experiences more consistent weather conditions. During the dry season, you can expect up to 12 hours of daily sunshine and higher temperatures. For those looking to soak up the sun, the dry season is a popular choice whereas adventurers and budget travelers often prefer to visit Costa Rica during the rainy season. You can experience sunshine year-round and Costa Rica has some phenomenal places to visit whatever the weather.
When is the rainy season in Costa Rica?
Unlike many countries, Costa Rica’s global positioning means it only has two seasons rather than four. Also known as the green season, the rainy season in Costa Rica falls between May to November. As a country in the northern tropics, the main driver of Costa Rican rainfall is the rise in humidity. The wettest months in Costa Rica are September and October with the highest amount of rainfall. However, rainfall is highly unpredictable and can range from a light afternoon shower to a dramatic storm. It is also possible for days and weeks to go by with no rainfall at all even during the rainy season. The rainy season is Costa Rica’s off-peak season for tourism. Costa Rica’s dry season is between December and April. However, due to the country’s diverse micro-climates, weather and seasons may vary dramatically depending on your location in Costa Rica.
What can I expect during the rainy season in Costa Rica?
Costa Rica’s rainy season starts off slowly, gradually building up and during the earlier months of the rainy season, you can still expect relatively predictable weather and high temperatures. Temperatures in the rainy season are more comfortable without the intense heat of the dry season. However, the wettest months of September and October are not without their sunshine, and between rainfall, experience the sunniest weather of the year on the Caribbean Coast. During the wettest months, many remote areas of Costa Rica are inaccessible by road and can also experience flash floods. With intense rainfall, nature flourishes, and the rainy season is accompanied by phenomenal landscapes. Lush rainforests and blooming flowers give Costa Rica the best scenery during the rainy season.
Visit Costa Rica during the rainy season
If you’re planning to visit Costa Rica, there is no reason not to visit during the rainy season. With moderate crowds, lower pricing and more comfortable temperatures, Costa Rica’s rainy season is much more relaxed. No matter what the weather, Costa Rica is a phenomenal destination to visit and a little rainfall will not get in the way of your incredible Costa Rican experience.
