Travel to Jaco Costa Rica
As one of Costa Rica’s finest destinations, Jaco is one of the country’s most impressive vacation spots. Popular with both local and international travelers, Jaco is a lively town offering beautiful beaches, thrilling adventure and vibrant nightlife. Whether you base yourself in Jaco or visit for a day, the town is an exciting location to visit during your time in Costa Rica. However, before you begin your Jaco adventures, you need to travel there and thankfully, there are multiple options to suit your travel plans and budget.
Where is Jaco
Jaco can be found on the Pacific coast and is the closest beach town to the capital city. The coastal town is easily accessible from across the country and is less than two hours from San Jose. If Jaco is the first or only destination you are visiting in Costa Rica, you will arrive in the Costa Rican capital of San Jose at Juan Santamaria Airport.
Driving to Jaco
Traveling to Jaco from the airport, the journey is approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes should you choose to drive and you can rent a car directly at the airport. You can choose from international car rental companies such as Enterprise, Avis and Hertz or alternatively, you may secure a better deal with a local hire company. It is advised to preorganize your car rental prior to travel to secure your vehicle. However, if you decide to drive last minute, you can typically arrange your rental car upon arrival but may have more limited options.
Public transport to Jaco
The most budget-friendly option between the airport and Jaco is public transportation, however, it does involve a connection. A bus departs from San Jose’s Terminal 7-10 to Jaco at least every two hours with additional services on Fridays and weekends. On both Saturday and Sunday, you can expect a bus to depart every hour. The journey time via public transportation takes approximately 2 hours and is incredibly priced.

Alternatively, if you are traveling to Jaco from the airport, you can also take a taxi transfer. Whilst the fare will cost more than a shuttle transfer, your journey to Jaco will be private and quicker. Fast and convenient, taking a taxi is often the best option for traveling to Jaco, particularly after a long flight.
